Possum Control

Possum Control in Dallas

Full-Service Opossum Removal Backed by 38 Years in North Texas

Opossums are the only marsupial native to North America, and they’re a familiar nuisance across urban and suburban Dallas. At Addison Pest Control of Texas, possum control is part of a complete wildlife operation we’ve been running since 1986. When we respond to a possum call, we don’t just remove the animal. We assess the full picture: entry points, structural damage, and secondary pest activity the intrusion may have introduced.

We serve residential and commercial properties throughout Dallas and the surrounding Dallas Metro. Free inspections and estimates are available for possum and wildlife calls.

Why Opossums Become a Problem on Dallas Properties

Dallas properties offer opossums exactly what they’re looking for: food, warmth, and shelter. Garbage bins, pet food left outside, compost piles, and vegetable gardens all draw them in. Once they’ve found a reliable food source, they start looking for somewhere to stay.

Attics, crawl spaces, and the areas under decks, porches, and sheds are common nesting sites, especially in cooler months when females are raising young. A single litter averages around seven to nine young, and females can produce two litters per year. An animal that moves in to raise a family may remain as long as conditions remain favorable.

Inside a structure, opossums tear up insulation, chew wiring, and leave behind droppings and urine that create foul odors and sanitation concerns. They’re also prime hosts for fleas that can transfer to household pets, and they carry diseases including leptospirosis, tularemia, and coccidiosis. The risk isn’t limited to direct contact: contaminated nesting material and droppings carry their own hazards.

Signs You Have a Possum Problem

Opossums are nocturnal, so activity signs often appear before you ever see the animal. Knowing what to look for lets you act before the situation gets worse.

Common indicators include:

  • Sounds at night: Thumping or shuffling in the attic or crawl space, louder than rodent movement but generally quieter than a raccoon
  • Droppings: Larger than rodent droppings, found in attics, along fence lines, near garbage bins, or around garden beds
  • Disturbed food sources: Raided garbage, overturned pet food dishes, or foraging damage along the foundation
  • Shredded insulation: Nesting material in the attic is a clear sign an animal has moved in
  • Foul odors: Accumulation of droppings, urine, or in some cases a deceased animal in an enclosed space
  • Visible entry gaps: Openings along rooflines, soffits, vents, or foundation edges that a perimeter inspection can confirm

Our Possum Removal Process

Our approach to opossum removal covers every stage, from the first inspection through cleanup and exclusion. We follow Texas regulations for nuisance wildlife handling throughout.

One detail that requires care: if a female opossum is inside a structure, her young may still be with her or nearby. Removing the mother before addressing the young creates a separate and more serious problem. Our team checks for this before proceeding.

Inspection & Trapping

We start with a thorough inspection to identify where the animal is active, how it’s entering the structure, and whether young are present. We set live traps in the attic or other active areas to capture opossums without harm. When animals can exit on their own, we install one-way door exclusion devices that let them leave without requiring direct handling.

Exclusion & Cleanup

After removal, we seal the entry points that allowed access in the first place. Cleanup follows: droppings, nesting material, and contaminated insulation are removed, and any structural damage is addressed. Skipping this step can leave behind odors that may draw new wildlife to the same spots.

Secondary Pest Treatment

Because possum control falls within our full-service pest operation, we can identify and treat flea populations or other secondary pest activity the intrusion introduced.

38 Years of North Texas Wildlife Experience

Addison Pest Control of Texas has served Dallas-area homes and businesses since 1986. We’re a local, family-owned company, not a national franchise, and our team has direct familiarity with the wildlife pressures specific to North Texas properties. We hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and maintain active memberships in the Greater Dallas Pest Control Association, the National Pest Management Association, and the Frisco Chamber of Commerce.

Possum control is one part of a broader wildlife operation that also covers raccoons, squirrels, skunks, and pigeons. We offer one-time removal treatments and ongoing service plans for both residential and commercial properties.
